We're Back!!! and had a blast in 2004

Feb 19-22, 2004

C4P 2005 Event

Los Padres Nat’l Forest & Santa Monica Mtns, Ventura County, CA

A JABOY* Lunacy Too Idiotic to Miss

Well, we’re back!  Back only because you demanded it (you idiots!!), C4P will once again get into your ultra game plan, and for your recruited newbies, this will be an experience that you will tell your grand kids/shrink/pet rat.   Bill Kee and I will be sharing the demented pleasure of organizing your trail pain.  Bill is best known for his choice of killer trails in Ojai (“you mean, there’s more?!!?”) and Pt Mugu State Park is my backyard.  So you want a little climb?  Bill has picked out some new terrain that you will marvel, curse and sing “Bye Bye American Pie” about.  I will be handling your every pre-event whim through email/snail mail (keep it clean (no, no, be suggestive…)) and many of the logistics to keep this the unique foolishness it’s been in the past five years.  Chris Scott will continue to keep close eye on Bill and I (as if…), and he will continue as the master of ceremonies, including some new hats and some surprises (Chris always makes this interesting).

 So, here’s the scoop:

C4P 2004, Coyote FourPlay for those new to the event, will begin on Thursday, February 19 and continue through Sunday, February 22.   In line with our previous insanity, we will fill these days with runs of 7, 50, 40 and 32 miles, with options for fewer miles each day.  Each day will be followed with dinner, you as the best entertainment in town, prizes and some additional competitive events.  This year we went bowling on Saturday night (at home, would you spend any normal Saturday night doing that?), and we’re depraved enough to do it again, so you vets can improve on your personal best (the Canadian team’s average should improve to almost 50…), sport your ever-stylish C4P bowling shirts, and conjure up a new hairdo.

For the out-of-towners, the locally unemployed with more time on their hands, and those just itching to see more of the best trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, I will be leading the warm-up to C4P and running the Backbone Trail on February 17th and 18th.  Just like 2003’s, that’s another 70 miles to add to your C4P log, plus those two days will  provide some great memories and views with your best running buddies.

So mark you calendars, take the week off, practice your bowling or sharpen your wit (but not both), and get ready for the next C4P.

Lodging

Best Western Oxnard Inn –

This is the preferred place to stay due to its central to our running locations, nice rooms and is close to a place to get early morning breakfasts.

1156 South Oxnard Boulevard, Oxnard, California, 93030
Phone: 805-483-9581  Toll Free Reservations: 800-469-6273

I have reserved up to 20 rooms for our event.  You can call them direct at the 805 number above and tell them you are part of the “Coyote Four Play Event”.  All rooms are set up for double occupancy (2 queen beds).  The rate is $89.99 and is good for February 16 – 21.  The Managers name is Glory if you have any problems.

Comfort Inn – Camarillo

984 W. Ventura Blvd. Camarillo, CA,

Phone: (805) 987-4188

You can find them on the web at Expedia at a competitive rate (in the $70s).  The location is relatively close to the runs in Pt. Mugu State Park and easy access to the 101 freeway.  Early morning breakfasts will be more of a challenge here and car pool to the 50 Miler will require you to meet the rest of the crew at Best Western.

Hampton Inn & Suites is brand new and open for business.    Just ask for the Coyote Four Play event.  Rates may vary depending on availability but we have arranged for $99 rate.  Include continental Breakfast, Jacuzzi, new facility.

Subject: Coyote 4 Play Update at the Deadline
Well here we are at the cutoff date for entries and we have quite a crowd coming in to run the Coyote Four Play this year.  I have posted a list of current entrants based on actually getting their app.  I have many other confirmations and expect to get these entries in the next few days.  This is your last chance to sign up and get great Patagonia clothing and bowling shirt before I place the order.  I will be sending out color choices to entrants this weekend and then ordering them next week.  After that time you are welcome to join in, but I cannot guarantee any apparel.

Please contact me, if you have not already, if you intend to attend the event.

As for our local trails, we have had our share of rain but less than normal.  The Coyotes are out in force and dressing up the trails, can you say scat, for your arrival.

Here is another option for Lodging in close proximity to the 101 freeway and Point Mugu State Park:

12/17/03

On my morning runs this week I saw 3 coyotes and I figured that was a sign to get the word out to remind you to start getting those C4P entry forms filled out and sent it.  Yes the deadline is not until January 6 but look at it this way.  Your hangin' out with your family and buds over the holidays working on your beer curls and you can tell them about your upcoming visit to Southern California to run with "Just a Bunch of Yahoos".   Not just to run... but an event to run some serious miles and enjoy some fabulous trails, good food, drink and great camaraderie.

The Holiday and the days off are right around the corner (family, parties, end of year projects at work) and I know you are trying to figure out.... "What days am I going to get those long runs in"?.  Wouldn't it be great to have a goal of a 200 mile trail running week to think about and motivate you on your next run?  And if not 200 then you pick the number and we will find the appropriate amount of abuse to dish out to make it worth your while.

For those people that already on my mailing list and have a current goal like getting picked for Western States like I did (congrats to Mary Gorski, Ric Hatch, Joe Clapper, Andy Boyd and others to be revealed), C4P is a great way to start your serious training.

So give yourself a great gift for the holidays and sign up for C4P.

Email to the C4P list:

Back by popular demand, Coyote Four Play will once again be a reason for you to get excited, get in shape, get dressed up, get out West (or east for you islanders) and come out to California for a truly unique running experience.   C4P will be held February 19-22 with the traditional Scrub Run of the Backbone trail on 2/17 & 18.
This will be the first of a number of emails that will give you the details of the event.

1). If you don't want to get any more of these messages drop me a note and I'll take you off of distribution.

2). If you know of others who would enjoy this experience forward this on to them.  You get special treatment from the Race Directors if you bring in newbies.

3). The links below will take you to the event Web site and a more thorough (read "out there") description of the event.

HTML Entry Form

4). Still working on some discounts at the local hotels and I will send out a follow-up note on that in the coming weeks.

5). Costs to support the Backbone Scrub Run will be potluck and are not included in the C4P entry.  Basically, you'll chip in for aid station stuff, and maybe a bit for gas for those folks willing to act as support vehicles (we'll need such volunteers to carry this off).  Many people last year got caught in a snow storm on the East Coast and missed the fabulous first day of the Backbone Run.  They were bummed.....  The Race Directors have made special arrangements with the Weatherman for this not to occur in 2004.  So make your travel plans and get out West.

6). For those in Wisconsin and Massachusetts that Chris and I have met over this last year... you will really enjoy the weather out in California in February so come on down.

On behalf of the JABOYs we look forward to seeing you at this event.  Drop me an email and let me know if you can join us and follow that up with the entry form in the usual C4P style.

Happy Trails,

Howard

4. Check for Ticks after your run.  I got a "panty-line tick" today (1/11/04).  She only had a snack as I found her within an hour after the run.   Communal tick checking is a great way to get to know your fellow runners.

5. Map of the Santa Monica Mountains with the backbone trail clearly marked.  This also shows access to Pacific Coast Highway and the 101 Ventura Freeway.

6. All newbies must buy a drink for their "newbie sponsors".  All "newbie sponsors" (if on your application) see the RD for free round at the bar.
